This is a project page to establish seed libraries in prisons so that prisoners may garden and participate in documenting growouts. This project has many benefits:

  • For Inmates, and Detainees
    • Psychologically beneficial program with the freedom to exercise their own agency and nurturing
    • Developing and exercising a gardening or farming skill set
    • Potential to connect with cultural foods that the inmate does not currently have access
    • Keeps a record of the Grower and their experience with that plant connecting them to a project on going outside the prison.
    • Provides an alternative food source to the cafeteria diet
  • For Seed Banks
    • Access to potentially skilled growers
    • Provides an isolated environment for grow outs that avoids the risks of cross hybridization via air pollination.
    • Potential to have a record created of the plant growth
    • Potential to have seeds harvested and returned to the Seed Bank
    • contributes to their mission of spreading sustainable agricultural practices
  • For Librarians
    • Provides a contemplative and kinetic program to their patrons
    • Seeds and documents are provided by seed banks, free of cost
